The Médoc region can be found stretching north west from the city of Bordeaux. Ranging 10 km in width, the vineyard strip runs 80 km from the northern suburb of the city. Though lacking the refined stature of the “village” wines, the region boasts of an unmistakable fruit character unique to the left bank, while also proffering a keenly priced alternative to the more famous vineyards within this region.
The Médoc lies just north of Saint-Estèphe. Médoc and Haut-Médoc can be read, quite simply, as the northern and southern parts of the same region respectively. Soils of the northern Médoc typically contain higher levels of clay in their composition thus a colder soil resulting in a slightly delayed ripening period. This prolonged ripening invites the plantation of more Merlot, a precocious grape variety. Soils found in the south are warmer, consisting of more sand and gravel, well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, a late ripener.
