Some of the greatest white wines in the world can be found in Bordeaux. Within the appellations of Pessac-Léognan and Graves, the Sémillon and Sauvignon grapes have been combined to produce excellent results, particularly when barrel-fermented or, at least, oak aged.
The proportions of these grapes vary from Château to Château and such variations are indicated in our tasting notes. The Sémillon brings out body while also providing a waxy feel (beeswax), hints of lanolin and sometimes an added touch of nutty, butter and popcorn complexity. Wines made from Sémillon age very well and have an excellent synergism with oak. The eponymous and aromatic Sauvignon blanc yields a pleasantly vegetal, lemony fruitiness with an expressive and appealing fresh and zestful character.

Château de France 2015
Superbly aromatic with tangerine, ripe melon, star fruit and pineapple with a hint of classy Sémillon touch (70% Sauvignon 30% Sémillon) sustained by good acidity, this is going to appeal to some tasters that like their whites lively, medium bodied and fully expressive.
Château la Louviere 2010
Medium to full bodied and silky, creamy style typical of Pessac-Léognan. Rich on the nose and palate. Lovely balance of aromatic fruitiness between apricot, aged orange peel, caramelized pear, and flowery complexity. Complex depth in mid palate. Lightly buttery in a long finish which is crisp and refreshing (85% sauvignon). Great with food or on its own.
Château de Fieuzal 2010
Accacia honeyed fruitiness on the nose and the oak vanillin is still perceived. Very impressive and appealing style. Made with 70% Sauvignon and 30% Sémillon. Palate showing some weight and a fine texture with an expressive and a complex mix of lemon peel and white peach, some butter and vanilla. Rich, ripe and lively, the finish is fresh, clean, crisp and precise with good length. Will last for another decade if stored properly.
Domaine de Chevalier 2014
Grand Cru Classé. Pale yellow with a golden sheen. Needs 2-3 hours to open up and will unfold nicely when decanted. Broad, fine length and complexity. A masterpiece of synergism between Sauvignon Blanc (75%) and Sémillon (25%) with oak. Shows layers of tropical fruits and a delicate hint of spicy oak, pear and lemon peel. Integrated now and superb in quality.

Unusually high in Sémillon with almost 50% in the assemblage. This imparts a different aromatic and flavour profile to this Pessac-Léognan with a very good weight and a lovely complex nutty orange peel effect. Great substance on the mid palate. Full bodied and a long finish.

One of the two greatest white Bordeaux. Fantastic depth. Essentially made with Sémillon (84%). Onctuous and dramatically exotic with aromatics not unlike Sauternes but without any residual sugar. Shows a deep 24 carat gold sheen. Imposing. An incredible tactile and aromatic persistence. A huge maturing potential of up to 30 years and more in the most pristine cellaring conditions.
Château Haut-Brion 2012/13
€770 (available in cases x 6)
One of the greatest white wines in the world. Made from small parcels planted with 53% Sémillon and 47% Sauvignon. This tiny production of less than eight thousand bottles a year is extremely difficult to find. Remarkable bounce, concentration and depth. Unforgettable.
