Saint-Estèphe is separated from Pauillac by a stream. Vineyards are planted in gravel with a cool clay base. This cold type of soil tends to produce very deep coloured wines with a rich texture. Saint-Estèphe wines can seem austere in their early years but unfold gracefully in time, once their leathery tannins have fully integrated.
Pauillac to the south, produces dense, rich and glossy fruity wines with thick, ripe and attractive chewy tannins. A mix aroma of cassis (blackcurrent) and cedar wood (cigar box), is typical of Cabernet Sauvignon, and particularly in Pauillac wines. Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes add a mellow touch and some elegance respectively.
